Worked as an accountant for the Homestake Mine in Deadwood, South Dakota where it is said he killed two "indians". His gun was later given to his family in Kansas.

Wilson Gutzman's history of his father says that John hauled freight for General Miles of the US Army during the Indian Wars. At that time he was shot in the leg with an arrow which caused him to limp for the rest of his life.
